Pinan Sandan[edit | edit source]

Pinan Sandan, the third of the Pinans. It's basically overflow locking techniques which wouldn't fit into pinan shodan. Plus the bear hug escape method.

  • Turn left 90° into nekoashi-dachi or kokutsu-dachi (in the Heian variation) and execute uchi-ude-uke to the left using your left arm and leg forward.

  • Step forward your feet together into heisoku-dach and execute a double "block", left arm downwards and right arm upwards. It's important to get the left arm within the right as they pass one another.

  • Turn left 90° into nekoashi-dachi or kokutsu-dachi (in the Heian variation) and execute uchi-ude-uke to the left using your left arm and leg forward. The Heian variation makes use of morote-uke rather than uchi-uke.

  • Step forward in zenkutsu-dachi and execute nukite with the right hand and leg forward, the left is pulled to the hip with hikite.

  • Step across to the left with the front foot and rotate anti-clockwise 180°. The right hand nukite is brought round to the back.

  • Continue the anti-clockwise rotation another 90° into shiko-dachi or kiba-dachi in the Heian variant. Strike out to the left horizontally with tettsui-uchi (hammer fist). The right arm nukite should be fully behind your back level with the ground.

  • Rotate anti-clockwise another 90° and step forward into zenkutsu-dachi with right leg forward and execute oi-tsuki strongly, bringing your arm from behind your back to the front.

  • Bring your rear left leg up to your right and rotate 180° anti-clockwise, into heisoku-dachi place your arms by your side. When rotated, bring your fists to your hips and push elbows out.

  • Step forward rotating 90° anti-clockwise into shiko-dachi or kiba-dachi. Swing your shoulders anti-clockwise and block with empi-uke with your right arm.

  • Strike uraken-uchi jodan with your right fist and bring it back to your hip.

  • There are different variants of this movement. The uraken-uchi transitions into a shuto sakotsu-uchikomi in the heian and some pinan versions pushing out to the left. The left hand is brought back to the hip with hikite. Some pinan versions rotate to the right and block with uchi-uke instead.

  • Step forward into zenkutsu-dachi executing oi-tsuki with left leg and arm forwards. Often there is a kiai here.

  • Rotate into hachiji-dachi (kiba-dachi in the heian variant) and punch over your left shoulder while pulling your left hand to the hip with hikite.

  • Shuffle to the right a half step in kiba-dachi (or shiko-dachi in pinan variants).
